The BADDEST ASS LIEUTENANT by Abel Ferrera

Lived by Harvey Kietel

Check out the awesome trailer. Hint : foxfaith films??

INT: LATE NIGHT - THE NUN'S HOSPITAL EXAMINING ROOM

From just outside the door, LT peep-toms on the NUN while
she is being examined. He sees her stark naked, laid out on
a table, her legs spread wide apart.

The DOCTORS, NURSES, COUNSELORS work on the NUN as if they
are automatons. They don't grasp either the humanity or the
trotitism of the scene. LT does. The image of The Alabaster
Nun turns him on no end. Yet there is also a deeper pathos
               to the scene.

And the NUN is spectacularly beautiful. She doesn't speak.
               Looks like a Pieta.

A DOCTOR in a WHITE-COAT reads the MEDICAL REPORT to a FEMALE
COP. The FEMALE COP writes down the details on a hard-backed
pad. As if it's a parking ticket.

The moving contrast between the words and the image seems to
be apparent to LT -- and the NUN -- alone.

                                     DOCTOR
                              (to Female Cop)
                         They inserted a crucifix eleven
                         centimeters into her vaginal aperture,
                         breaking the hymen membrane. Then
they pursued the same course with
                         their natural organs of sexual
penetration. They used a sharp object,
probably a hunting knife with a curved
blade, to carve a cross between her
                         shoulder blades, entering the flesh
an average of nearly one centimeter
throughout the area of the wound.
                         They --

Finally, as if she knew he was there all along, the NUN looks
up at where LT is hiding and boldly meets his eyes.

                                                                    CUT TO:

INT: VERY LATE NIGHT - ARIANE'S APARTMENT

LT has been there for some time. They are alone. They've
               both been DRINKING and COKING.

LT is carrying on about the NUN. As he speaks about various
subjects, his tone changes radically. From contempt and
cynicism to profound reverence. From decadence -- to awe.
ARIANE, too, manages to switch from one attitude to the other.

                                     LT
Have you ever seen a naked nun? I
tell you, man, I went to school with
the nuns, I've seen hundreds since
then and I've never even seen a nun's
                         belly button, you understand? But
this nun, let me tell you. What a
                         beautiful lady...
                              (snaps out of his awe)
And where'd the Church get the 50 G
in the first place? The fucking Church
is the biggest scam going. You know
what's the real killer? It costs
$8,000 per kid for them to go to
                         parochial school. I've got three
kids in there already, with two on
the way! Christ. That fucking reward
is my money, man! But that's Church
policy. The Pope is the world's
biggest bookie. Makes people bet on
their own salvation! Double or nothing
on Heaven. You go to Hell -- then go
to Hell. In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was bullshit.

ARIANE can't stop thinking about the rape.

                                     ARIANE
I can't get over what those guys did
                         to her. I just can't.

                                     LT
They're alive, aren't they? Come on,
man! Everyone's making such a fucking
fuss, just because she's a nun. Just
because she wears a penguin suit,
the church puts up 50 G for the guys
who dared to rape her. Do you think
they'd put up a dime if you got raped?
Of course not. Or even for your little
sister? The virgin? Like shit they
                         would.

                                     ARIANE
                         Susie's not a virgin anymore.

                                     LT
She's fucking nine years old! Jesus
                         Christ.

               ARIANE suddenly starts up.

                                     ARIANE
And the nun's not a virgin anymore,
either. Will they make her leave the
                         convent?

               LT thinks for a moment.

                                     LT
Who knows? Who knows what their policy
                         is.
                              (sudden dreamy
                              reverence)
But I'll tell you, man, that nun...
                         She was beautiful. Just beautiful...
Tall... Real tall... I've never seen
                         anything like it...

LT snaps out once again, grabs the TELEPHONE. He dials LITE.

He's not in. LT leaves ARIANE'S NUMBER on LIMELITE'S BEEPER.

               Hangs up.

                                     LT
                              (to himself)
Lite, man... Where the fuck are you?

ARIANE can't get the image of the rape out of her mind.

                                     ARIANE
It's horrible. They burned her breasts
                         with cigarettes. Christ.

                                     LT
Yeah? At least she's alive! I see
people get killed every day! Worse
yet, tortured first and then killed!
The nuns got off easy. Jeez. Cigarette
                         burns. Everyone's all upset about
                         fucking cigarette burns. I'll show
                         you cigarette burns!

LT stubs out his CIGARETTE on the back of his hand. He does
the move with intensity and bravado.

ARIANE responds by calmly doing the same. But she does it
entirely impassively, and rubs the CIGARETTE into her flesh
               longer than LT did.

ARIANE comes over to LT and starts kissing and licking his
               CHEST.

                                     ARIANE
Do you believe in God? Do you believe
that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?.

               LT hesitates.

ARIANE kneels down in front of LT. As if in prayer.

               She starts giving him head.

Before he can answer The Question, he is saved by the bell.
The PHONE RINGS. LT picks up immediately. It's LITE.

As LT speaks to LITE, ARIANE continues to give him head.

                                     LT
                              (to LITE; over the
                              phone)
Yeah, I know, I know all about it.
                         Enough already about the fucking
nuns. Yeah. Yeah. So just take the
bet. Don't give me any hassles, man.
Just put in my bet. 30 G's. Yeah.
And I got $900 from the cops on
                         Oakland. Yeah. Right. Strawberry's
gonna knock em dead. Of course he
is! You know that! Yeah. Yeah. Have
                         faith, man! OK. Right.

LT hangs up, thinks ARIANE won't resurface the God Question.

ARIANE does, even as she gives him head. Every time she
speaks, she pulls away and it frustrates him. This dialectic
               continues throughout the scene.

                                     ARIANE
                         Do you believe in God?

LT thinks about it, even as ARIANE gets him hotter and hotter.

                                     LT
The Church is a fucking racket. I
know how they operate. I've been
part of the racket since the first
time some faggot priest spilt water
on my head. My Aunt Lu says I was
crying all the way through. Yeah, I
know their game inside out. Now I'm
free of it and I'm gonna stay that
                         way.

                                     ARIANE
I'm not talking about the fucking
Church. Fuck the Church. But tell
me. Do you believe in God?

                                     LT
                         What's to believe?

                                     ARIANE
That Jesus Christ was the Son of God
and he came to die for your sins.

LT can't respond. He's distracted by his own pleasure.

ARIANE does something OC that causes LT sudden pain.

LT cries out. Snaps to attention. Looks at ARIANE.

                                     ARIANE
                         Your sins, Lieutenant!
                              (beat)
And look around you! Where do you
think all this shit came from?

ARIANE gives him head again. LT is more excited now than
               before she hurt him.

                                     LT
                         People.

                                     ARIANE
You believe that man is the be-all
                         and end-all?

                                     LT
                         Yeah.

                                     ARIANE
OK. OK. Fine. But -- do you believe
                         in God?

As if in answer. LT begins to RECITE THE ACT OF CONTRITION

                                     LT
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
                         Creator of Heaven and Earth...

This turns on ARIANE. She stops talking. Writhes and grapples
               him.

LT is reaching climax. When describing Jesus rising again --

               LT has an orgasm.

Romance by Richard Linklater

They talk, talk , talk , and talk. And they talk some more. and some more..and they talk and talk and talk.
They talk as if that day would be the last day in their lives..as if they vaulted those thoughts just for that day. They talk about how they met 9 years back, on a train (Before Sunrise) and fell in love. How they had to leave on the same day and promised that they were gonna call..and how they lost each others messages and how they went on with their lives and how much disappointed they are with their lives...etc. etc.

My friends, this is my kind of romance. An adult romance. Not for the boys whose heart melts at the sight of a histrionic woman and a girl who  becomes wet at the thought of an alpha male. No, this is not about instant love. Because, these same adults ..found love like that...just in a day and consummated the same night. But, it didnt work out. They meet again now. He comes to paris to sign his book and she goes to meet him. You want them to fall in love again and break in to a song and dance...but they dont..they just talk. He has to go..his flight in the evening..but they just talk..and she cries..and his eyes becomes moist. Ethan Hawke, what a great actor he is! Julie Delphy is phenomenal!

There is something great about adults falling in love.  Kids falling in love is mandatory. Its the harmones. But, adults, after all the shit they have seen, when they fall in love..its is beautiful. It wont have the same feeling as teenage love..because it has depth..the depth of taste that differentiates between a good wine and a kool aid.

I showed this movie to many of friends. The first reaction was always  " WTF..nothings happening dude..they are just talking and talking and talking..nothing is happening..not even sex"...then ..he gotta leave to airport and he has utmost  an hour or something .and he comes to her apartment..and then he asks her to sing..and she sings..and she tells whatever she wants to say in that song..everything..

If you dont like this movie..trust me..you are still a kid.

Whats the emotion you feel "Before Sunset"?
One of the very few times a sequel is better than the original.

Violent Scorsese

Let me tell you something about realistic portrayal of violence. Violence when realistically shown should directly take you and put you in the victims shoes. Such kind of cinematic violence would make you shun the violence or at least make you think twice about committing such kind of things. Some of the so called 'realistic' directors never showed realistic violence. They showed the dance of violence, where the bullets were soft and tears were fake. Scorsese glamorized violence ( btw, I have no problem with that and I like them)..but this scene is the most unglamorous portrayal of it. Even the killers had no fun killing them.Look at their faces.

Let me ask you about the morality of this situation. While watching this scene, just imagine, what if  you and your siblings were in the position of those brothers. It could be some robbers or some religious riots. You wanna save your sibling. Emotions rise...and love comes out along with tears..and then you get the super human strength..and with that strength you fight back...but then...the iron rod strikes on your head. Just imagine your pain... disorienting .....head spinning....and your mother smiling..and then one more strike..which makes u fall. Where is the emotion? where is the strength? where is the will?? You just wanna survive. You would beg them..touch and kiss their feet..and would do whatever they want you to do. Dont blame yourself.
Thats just our genes!

Guess who?

QUEST FOR FIRE.

This is it. If you wanna see how fore parents to our grandparents lived, this is it. I just couldn't find any flaw in this one. Ridiculously entertaining. Frightening ..and even funny sometimes. It made me feel that every generation had the same dreams ..and same fear..and same aspirations. They went out for the 'quest for fire' and we came here for the 'quest for money'. But at the heart of it..it is all about 'quest for love' and 'quest for happiness'. I am very much sure that, we, the first generation immigrants would never find that happiness. We are just scapegoats for our progeny. History of the world is history of immigration. It never stops. But, I refuse to accept the pressure that comes naturally with that migration. Happiness is within yourself.

Jean-Jacques Annaud is the mad man who made this.

RUN LOLA RUN --- LOLA RENNT --- RUN LOLA RUN.

The only movie I watched back-to-back 2 times. This movie is an assault on visionary and hearing senses.
The camera, sound and editing coming together to make you sit on the edge. Franka potente runs and runs ..runs..runs..and runs. The whole movie. She runs in three different scenarios. Philosophy is knee jerk..but the experience is adrenaline. Directed by Tom Tykwer.

Movie : Primer, Budget : 7,000 dollars

Ever heard a movie with  a budget of $7000 ( before printing costs), that too made with film, generate soo much geeky discussion on the internet.

The discussion :

The story behind  "making of this movie" can be made in to a  movie...and I am sure someone will do it in the future. Instead of inspiring me, that story totally depresses me. If you watch seinfled, you would notice that josh and myself are kind of like seinfeld-george pair.George being me.So, as usual...

Seinfeld, I believe, is one of the greatest sitcoms ever made in the history of American Television.
Usually liked by adults, mature people and people who like depth, wit and biting sarcasm in comedy...
and ofcourse..people who think life is about nothing.

A sample of it here :

After an argument.Poignant scenes..;)

Me : some times friends act as mirrors and what u see may not be perfect
Pramod : A true friend stabs you in the front - Unknown
Me : did it hurt?
Pramod : I was planning to ask the same.

The case for Aakali Rajyam/Varumayin Niram Sigappu/ Kingdom of Hunger

Preview
(Color is unsaturated in all the videos..but I feel this must be the appropriate color for this film)

No. This is not about philosophy. That philosophy died a long time back. That philosophy is now nostalgia. No.This is not about that.No movie can survive the time basing its strengths on philosophy. I am saying this, because, this movie was obviously inspired by leftist ideology. But, it never shows the solutions..implemented by that ideology. It just shows the conditions in which that kind of ideology might spring up. 1960-1980 were some of the most turbulent times in the world..when youth took up to the task of questioning oppression and exploitation. MLK, Malcolm X, Che, naxalism etc..to quote a few.I lean a bit towards socialism but not a hater of normal capitalism. Anyway, this is not about philosophy. This is about a movie.

The comparison.

In order for you to understand the praise received by slumdog, you need to watch a movie called "freaks"...(one of my fav scenes..btw).Watch that scene and come back here.

The movie freaks is about circus freaks. This movie shocked ppl  at that time and even now it shocks people. Something happens to the freak protagonist and the audience  want revenge...and so ..revenge they get. Slumdog follows the same principle.. shock, sympathy for protagonist..and then eventual winning of the hero.
Slumdog is really a good movie...but, does it deserve soo many oscars?? Yes. Because Oscars themselves are not worthy. They lost their worthiness long time back, when they refused to give oscar for Kubrick and then to 'Taxidriver' and most importantly they denied to spike lee for his monumental movie, 'Do the right thing'. Oscars is a private party of the rich hollywood studios which is televised all over the world. Even  if India win many oscars, it will be for only one reason - to capture the growing Indian market.

The west (esp. america) wants to see poverty and violence ( slumdog, city of god) from third world countries, so that it can feel good about itself and validate its system, but at the same time refuse to look at it own backyard ( Do the right thing, malcolm X). Its like the story of an ostrich which can see objects miles away..but will bury its head in sand when  its comes to its own territory. Yeah, I just made it up. The story of making slumdog could be the story of underdog..I dont care..because in the end..even if danny boyle is rebel in the westwood ..he is still the west's rebellious son. People like spike lee and even Kubrick to an extent are true rebels..and martin Scorsese..with all due respect.. is the cat on the wall. Its pathetic to see.. Indians rejoicing for getting an award for ar rahman..for a truly stupid song..that too an oscar which has lost its relevance long time back.

What is a good movie?.Often times, a movie becomes good not by itself. Lot of factors come in to play. First and foremost is the advertisement factor...and then peer pressure and then cool factors. Winning an oscar will make a movie must-watch. For me, a good movie is a good movie..when it has lot of passion. Very few movies (1000 among the thousands of movies made) has this passion. In order to understand passion..u gotta watch movies by werner herzog, especially, aguirre the wrath of god and fitzcaraldo. I am not only talking about the passion of herzog..but also the passion of the characters in his movies. If you are not making a movie with passion, then why the hell am I wasting 2 hours of my time???

I saw that passion in "Aakali Rajyam". I didnt see that in slumdog. Simple.
My argument is that - if oscar is/was given to really good movies and if Aakali Rajyam was sent at that time, it would have won it.

One of the qualities of a good movie is to represent and document the times in the history. AR does that.
Entertainment -  AR gives Loads of it.
Poignancy coming from realistic scenes - AR has it.
Top class acting - AR has it.
 poetry - has it.

Now, I want to talk directly to the indian movie goers..who are accustomed to watching movies..where they expect movies to be " Full Meals ".  A bit spicy, a bit masala, a bit sweet, a bit of hot..everything. Because, they argue..life is 'Full Meals'. I disagree with that. But, aakali rajyam, inadvertently is a full meals. That comes more from the realism of the movie..rather than the intentions of the film maker. It has to be like that ...there is no other way. Because, it is the true representation of life.

Proof?

 Poignancy.

watch the song and the lyrics. Watch sreedevi and also one of the best scenes in the movie.
This song is very relevant to any one who went overseas to earn his/her rice and pickle.
May be you lost your job...lost all your money..dont know where to go..then listen to this song.

did u
Ever felt the emotion of hunger, ever hunger clashed with ego...ever hunger won over ego and then when about to eat..

Sexuality.

Permutations and combinations.
Loser! I agree.

Romance.

I am nostalgic about this song...believe it or not, I remember listening to it at the age of 2.
Watch the ending of this song and sri devi's acting...observe her Saree..

A romantic song...but you will amazed at its meaning. Simplicity totally rocks!

    Poetry.

SRI SRI poetry. Space is too small to talk about him here (just like Fermat's last theorem).

Anger and hunger. Brother and sister.

This section..coming soon.

Acting :

Kamal Hassan acting is world class in this movie. But, it pisses me off a bit that he made a movie called 'hey ram'..which premise I dont accept. So, does it mean that actors dont believe what they say? ofcourse, this is a stupid question...because..I really wanted Kamal Hassan to believe what he is saying..its as if ..its impossible to act in that way if he dosent believe in it. I dont know if it makes me respect actors more or less..

Characters

Sri Devi's character is the character I love, adore, fantasize and... u get my point??

Climax

One of the best climaxes I have ever seen..The first time in the movie where the camera tracks..ie moves.... lot of techniques..the silence..the sound..great sequence.

and then a bonus epilogue...a little bit unrealistic and idealistic.

I identity a lot with kamal hassan's character. Identification with a character is one sure fire reason why a person likes a movie.

I have some problems with the movie though. This movie was about the 'Kingdom of Hunger' from the perspective of reformed brahmins..who revolted against castism and other forms of exploitation. Hunger may not have caste feeling..but the castes certainly do have the feeling of hunger. Without the mention of caste or female exploitation, no social movie can be sincere. Kamal says that its all dog eat dog world..and that castes does not matter. I agree. But, there is a huge difference between caste feeling and caste consciousness. Only through caste consciousness..caste would be eliminated forever. Never bury history ..learn lessons from it.  I strongly believe that time is ripe for  'Kingdom of hunger' to be remade   from the reformed lower caste perspective.

There is a reason why I beat this review to death. I wanna prove that commercial success of a movie doesn't determine its greatness (even though Aakali Rajyam was a hit at that time). Lot of great movies were flops at the time they were released, but discovered later. Audience are fickle, they dont know what they want. Their opinion can be swayed very easily. It is utterly ridiculous to compromise your movie for these fickle audience..and for the fickle Oscars and also for the fickle and stupid censors. Make your movie with passion..but avoid making a personal diary. You may die one day and money may come and money may go..but your film will remain forever. It is your legacy.

I rest my case.
